As
an experienced Martial Artist, how do I join?
The
essence of JKD and Kali, as taught at the Bob Breen Academy,
is inclusive and builds on any martial arts skills that you
have gained in the past. Our aim is to teach the principles
of martial arts training and to make you receptive to effective
techniques from whatever martial arts they may derive. We also
aim to fill any gaps in your experience that you may need or
want.
Getting
Started
If
you have had considerable martial arts experience, we would
recommend you take part in one of our regular Assessment Classes,
free of charge prior to becoming an Academy member. You can
arrange your free class either lunchtime or in the evening
An
assessment class is one of the regular classes on our timetable
where you can train with our other students. This enables the
instructor to assess your ability so that we can direct you
to the classes that would suit you best. The instructor who
takes the assessment class will let you know whether you need
to take our Phase one programme which starts with a six week
beginner's course of twelve lessons or slot into our main black
belt programme. You need to wear loose clothing and trainers
and if you have gloves and focus pads please bring them with
you.
Contact
the club to make an appointment for your free class. You will
probably want to join after your class, so remember to bring
a means of payment with you and your bank details if you would
like to pay on a monthly basis
If
you are assessed as being able to join our main black belt programme
then you may take part in any of our timetabled classes apart
from those labelled 'Phase 2-3'. If you have limited experience,
you may prefer as many experienced people have to start with
a beginners six week programme.
Frequently
asked questions
I
have never done JKD before only other styles can I still train
with you?
Absolutely,
we are used to welcoming Martial Artists from all styles. As
long as you have a martial mind set and an enquiring mind you'll
fit in perfectly without having to throw away your previous
hard earned skills
How
much will it cost
The
most you would pay for unlimited lunchtime classes and use of
the gym would be £42 per month. If you trained in the
evening with unlimited classes and use of the gym then it's
only £75 per month which is great value. If you would
like detailed information on the various membership options
or have any other questions then please contact us. We'll be
pleased to help.

Gradings
We
have regular gradings which offer a path to the higher phases
- black belt and beyond. There is normally a six month period
between grades though gradings ard done every three months.
Always check with one of your regular instructors that you are
at the correct skill level to grade. There is a small charge
for each grading. This fee includes your next grade T-shirt.
A list of grading dates will be posted on the club notice board.
