Fundamentals

These are the fundamental techniques that you will first learn at the Academy. They form the basis upon which you will build much of your fighting skill. Once you've got these down then other aspects and techniques can be linked with them to form a formidable offensive and defensive capability.

Core Essentials - HANDS

- Jab
- Double Jab
- Jab Cross
- Jab Cross Hook
- Cross Hook Cross
- Hook Cross Hook

Core Essentials - LEGS

- Front kick
- One step front kick (pendulum step)
- Round kick
- One step round kick (pendulum step)
- Side kick
- One step side kick (pendulum step)

Core Essentials - FEET

- Step and slide (four directions)
- Circling (around pad)
- Slide and step (front and rear)
- Curve left and right.

These striking techniques should be learnt so they can be integrated with the varied types of footwork shown by your instructors. The footwork gets you in the right place to either attack or defend and then if you've trained enough you can use the appropriate hand or foot weapon.

Once you've got these down then we move onto even more complex combinations. Combatively you will find that any fixed combination of over five moves tends to break down and the most effective ones are smaller in number like twos, threes and fours. These are then recombined to make hundreds of different combinations of your own making. Larger combinations are used as a way of extending your repertoire and giving you a glimpse of other possibilities.

Normally we use a lead low round kick in classes but any lead kick can be used. Bruce Lee loved to use the lead groin kick and it is undeniably effective.
